First Semi-final for PSG in 24years
Paris Saint Germain(PSG) finally made it pass the quarter-final of the Champions League since the take over of Arab billionaires 10 years ago. Their journey down to this match hasn’t been a roller-coaster even with Neymer and Mbappe in their ranks.
A first league 2-1 defeat to Dortmund saw everyone laughing at the Ligue champions and no one gave them a chance to make it pass the round of 16. But Mbappe and Neymer had other plans for the German team as they played behind closed doors due to the Coronavirus pandemic as the French side won on aggregate 3-2 by beating Dortmund 2-0.
Football after Coronavirus pandemic
Football was suspended as death toll due to the virus on increasing as day comes and goes. No quarter-final was insigh as everyone thought the season should be voided..
UEFA made it mandatory that the 2019/2020 UCL season should be concluded and from the quarter-final onward, it will be one leg and not the traditional 2 legs tournament format.
After draws were done and PSG got free scoring Italian side, Atalanta. A game where tipsters thought will have more than 3 goals ended up 2-1 with PSG the victors after trailing for 63 minutes. 2 late goals from Marquinos and Choupo-Moting in the 90th minutes of the game saw them leap into this stage of the competition.
1994/1995 season was the last time PSG reached this stage of Europe’s élite league competition. In that match, they lost both ties 1-0 and 2-0 respectively to eventual champions, Ajax.
This being the second time they will reach this stage of the competition, PSG comes against almost similar opponent to the 95 Ajax. The Dutch team had an average of 23 and the Ligue champions will be facing a Leipzig side with almost(23.5) the same average age.
Do we expect an upset in this match? It is not unlikely to have the Germain team send PSG packing, considering this Leipzig side were responsible for Tottenham and Atletico Madrid exit from this season’s UEFA Champions League.
Julian Nagelsmann could name the same XI that faced Atletico Madrid as Ibrahima Konate remains absent due to injury. If the starting XI isn’t changing, Christopher Nkuku will play against his former employers.
Marco Verratti and Keylor Navas availability for this match is in doubt. Angel Di Maria will return to the team after missing the quarter-final match against Atalanata due to ban.
Although Leipzig has been great this UCL season and confidence are high in their calm after the win over Atletico, I see this game ending with a 1-3 win for PSG.
