EPL Match Day 8 Review: A Wild Weekend of Upsets and Statements

October 20, 2025

Match day 8 of the Premier League was anything but predictable. We saw shocking results, dominant displays, and individual brilliance that have reshaped the top of the table and sent shockwaves through the league. Let’s break down the biggest games of the weekend.

Manchester United Stun Liverpool at Anfield

In the most anticipated clash of the weekend, Manchester United pulled off a massive 2-1 upset against Liverpool at Anfield. This was United’s first win at Anfield since 2016, and it was a dramatic one. Bryan Mbeumo gave United a dream start with a goal in the second minute. Liverpool, after falling behind, threw everything at United, with Cody Gakpo hitting the woodwork three times. Gakpo finally found the equalizer in the 78th minute, and it seemed the Reds would push for a winner. However, Harry Maguire had other ideas, heading home a brilliant Bruno Fernandes cross in the 84th minute to seal a famous victory for the Red Devils. This result marks Liverpool’s third straight league defeat and raises serious questions about their form, while a revitalized United climbs to ninth, just two points behind their rivals.

Haaland’s Brace Secures Comfortable Win for City

Manchester City continued their relentless march with a 2-0 victory over Everton at the Etihad. As expected, City dominated possession, but a resilient Everton defense held them at bay for the first half. However, the inevitable Erling Haaland broke the deadlock in the 58th minute and added a second just five minutes later to secure all three points. The win temporarily sent City to the top of the table, and Haaland’s brace took his tally to an incredible 24 goals in 13 appearances in all competitions.

Aston Villa’s Comeback Sinks Spurs

Tottenham’s struggles at home continued as they fell to a 2-1 defeat against a resurgent Aston Villa. Spurs got off to a flying start with Rodrigo Bentancur opening the scoring in the fifth minute. However, a stunning long-range strike from Morgan Rogers brought Villa level before halftime. The game seemed destined for a draw until Emiliano Buendia, on as a substitute, curled in a beautiful winner in the 77th minute. This was Villa’s fifth consecutive win in all competitions, a testament to the work Unai Emery is doing, while Spurs are left to ponder another disappointing result at their home ground.

Chelsea Cruise Past Nottingham Forest

Chelsea secured a comfortable 3-0 away win against a struggling Nottingham Forest. A second-half blitz saw goals from Josh Acheampong, Pedro Neto, and Reece James. The win was Chelsea’s third in a row and moves them up to fourth in the table. For Forest, the defeat was the final straw, with manager Ange Postecoglou being dismissed shortly after the final whistle, having failed to win in his first eight matches.

Trossard’s Goal Enough for Arsenal

Arsenal maintained their position at the top of the league with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Fulham at Craven Cottage. In a tight and cagey affair, a moment of quality from Leandro Trossard in the 58th minute was enough to separate the two sides. The win keeps Arsenal three points clear of Manchester City at the summit of the Premier League.

What to Expect After 8 Games

After a thrilling match day 8, the Premier League table is starting to take shape. Arsenal and Manchester City are looking like the teams to beat, with both sides showing consistency and quality. The battle for the top four is heating up, with Chelsea, Tottenham, and a surprising Bournemouth all in the mix.

Liverpool’s recent slump is a major talking point. Their frontline, once the most feared in Europe, has looked out of sorts. Mohamed Salah has been particularly quiet, and the team has struggled for creativity in the final third. It will be interesting to see if they can turn their form around and get back into the title race.

While I consider it a fluke, Manchester United’s win at Anfield could be a turning point in their season. It was a performance full of character and determination, and it will give them a huge confidence boost. If they can build on this result, they could yet be a force to be reckoned with.

The Premier League is living up to its reputation as the most exciting league in the world, and we can expect plenty more twists and turns in the weeks and months to come.
